Body Positive Post #9: How to dress for your body

Well, we are on body positive post number 8!  That’s actually kind of exciting because I didn’t think I was going to make it past the first post.  I did start running out of ideas so I was talking to one of my friends and she had actually requested that I one day write a post about how to dress for your body type.  Personally I don’t think she needs advice on this because if she is “fat” like she says she hides it well, so she obviously knows how to dress herself.  However, for the rest of you who have given up or are on the verge of giving up here are a few tips.  I did some research and from my own experience and opinion I came up with this article on how to dress for your body type.  This is for those of you who have a hard time adjusting to your size and it is to help you feel more confident after feeling frumpy for so long.  I know I’ve become victim to wearing leggings a lot because they are expandable but I can’t give up on myself and my wardrobe!  For those of you who are not comfortable wearing a crop top or anything risky at your size/shape lets tackle this beast of clothing of what fits together!  I’ve also added links to the articles that I’m crediting as resources for this article.  In the end I think that you should wear whatever you feel comfortable in as long as what you’re wearing is appropriate for the occasion.  Just because you’re size isn’t carried in your favorite stores, maybe you need to move onto different stores and find clothing that fits you and makes you happy, not makes you want to starve yourself for weeks just to fit into something.

HOURGLASS FIGURE

Description:  This is when your body is curvy with a tiny waist.  Your shoulders and hips are similar in proportion.  Think old Hollywood glam.
Celebrity Examples:  Marilyn Monroe she’s a poster child for this figure, Beyonce, Salma Hayek
Best Assets:  Your curves and tiny waist!
Goal:  Highlight your curves, emphasize your waist.

What to Wear

Pencil skirt, crop top, wrap dress, wide leg pant, high waisted pant, belt at the waist (especially a thick belt), fitted dress, lightweight fabrics, skinny/straight leg pants/jeans

What not to Wear

Baggy clothing.  You don’t want to hide your curves, you want to accentuate them, you have them for a reason!

PEAR

Description:  Lower body is wider than upper body.
Celebrity Examples:  Kim K, Eva Mendes, Jennifer Love Hewitt
Best Assets:  Shoulders, torso, and flat stomach
Goal: Elongate and balance your figure by accentuating top half

What to Wear

Aline skirts, hems of pants skirts and dresses wide to balance the hips, boat neck tops, square and cowl necklines, strapless dresses to show off arms, jackets that hit right above waist, structured jacket pointy toed shoes to elongate legs

What not to Wear

Clothing that draws attention to hips and thighs, such as cargo pants or print skirts.

APPLE

Description:  Weight accumulates above hips which are narrow, your back ribs and shoulders are broad and you may feel wider than other body types
Celebrity Examples: Drew Barrymore, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson
Best Assets: legs
Goal:  Minimize your tummy and highlight shoulders and legs and create the illusion of a waist

What to Wear

Vneck tops-illusion of longer torso, flowy tops, straight leg/boot cut pants, belts at smallest part of your waist, for tummy bulge wear empire tops and dresses, shorter skirts to show off your legs and take attention away from tummy

What not to Wear

Skinny jeans along with a tight top.  This will just make you feel out of place.

BANANA/RECTANGLE

Description:  Slim all over.  Waist, hip, and shoulder widths are similar.
Celebrity Example:  Natalie Portman, Cameron Diaz, Kate Hudson
Best Assets:  Arms and legs, don’t have to minimize any body features.
Goal:  Highlight thinnest part of your waist so your hips and bust appear larger and more proportional

What to Wear

Sweetheart tops to create curves, long jackets for a lean look, tops with collars and ruffles to flatter chest, add layers to create more dimensions, dresses with ruching cinches on sides are ideal, colorful bottoms, tapered pants

What not to Wear

Overwhelming styles

WEDGE/INVERTED TRIANGLE

Description:  Inverted triangle, body shape features a broad chest and wide shoulders which are large in proportion to a narrow waist and hips
Celebrity Examples:  Naomi Cambpell, Demi Moore, Renee Zellweger
Best Assets:  Legs
Goals:  Give your bottom half some more attention

What to Wear

Bright colors on bottom, wide leg pants, full skirts tops that call attention to waistline, high waisted styles, illusion of a waist

What not to wear

Spaghetti strap tops, boat neckline tops
